I am unable to open a OneNote file that my tutor has uploaded to Learning Edge.

This will be caused by the tutor having uploaded the original .onepkg file from OneNote 2016.

There are known compatibility issues with sending .onepkg files to a Mac, as the Mac version of OneNote 2016 relies on OneDrive to download OneNote notebooks. Additionally, OneNote 2016 and the OneNote App are separate programs and the OneNote App is unable to open .onepkg files.

Solution

  1. Ask if the student has downloaded Microsoft Office 365 from the following link: https://www.edgehill.ac.uk/services/office-download/ - Microsoft Office 365 includes OneNote 2016.
  2. If the student confirms that they do have Microsoft Office 365 and OneNote 2016 installed then ask for the student to contact their tutor to share the .onepkg file via OneDrive. The student should be able to open the original .onepkg file on their Mac this way.
  3. If the student is struggling with the above then ask for the them to contact their tutor to ask if they can export the OneNote notebook as a PDF or alternative format to send to the student directly to open with another program, such as Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat. Additional guidance in how to do this can be found at the following Microsoft link.
  4. If it is deemed essential for the document to remain as a OneNote notebook then the student will have to ask the tutor to copy and paste the contents of the OneNote 2016 file in to a brand new notebook within the OneNote App and then share the notebook to the student’s Edge Hill email address.
