I'm receiving a 404 Error when I click on a file in Learning Edge

If you are encountering a 404 Error when you click on a file in Learning Edge, the below steps can be used to resolve the issue. 

The full error message reads: "Server Error 404 - File or directory not found. The resource you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed or is temporarily unavailable." This is often caused by the browser or browser version that you are using. 

 

Google Chrome

If you are using Google Chrome as your browser, make sure that it is fully up to date. You can do this by:

  • Click on '...' in the top right-hand corner of the Google Chrome window.
  • Next, click on 'Help' followed by 'About Google Chrome...'.
  • In the following window, Google Chrome will check for updates. If an update is available, this will download.
  • Once downloaded, Google Chrome will prompt you to 'Relaunch' the browser. Click the 'Relaunch' icon.

Once Google Chrome has updated, try to click on the file link once more.

 

Mozilla Firefox

Mozilla Firefox does not appear to encounter this issue, but it is good practice to keep your web browser up to date. 

To update Mozilla Firefox:

  • Click on the triple-lined icon in the top right-hand corner of the Mozilla Firefox window.
  • Next, click on 'Help' followed by 'About Firefox'.
  • A pop-out window will appear and Mozilla Firefox will check for updates. If an update is available, this will download.
  • Once downloaded, relaunch Mozilla Firefox. 

Once Mozilla Firefox has updated, try to click on the file link once more. 

 

Microsoft Edge

It has been identified that a setting in the latest versions of Microsoft Edge can cause the 404 Error to appear. When this setting is turned off, the issue should be resolved.

To turn this setting off:

  • In Microsoft Edge, click on the '...' icon in the top right-hand corner, followed by 'Settings'.
  • In the 'Settings' window, click on 'Downloads' in the left-hand menu.
  • In the 'Downloads' menu, disable the 'Open Office files in the browser' option.
  • Close the 'Settings' window.

Once this setting has been disabled, try to click on the file link once more.
